St. Mary-Corwin Takes Part in Prestigious Study

(PUEBLO, COLO.) The Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin (DCC) has been accepted into a prestigious Patient Reported Outcomes Measure (PROM) study conducted by the Commission on Cancer (COC) and the American Cancer Society. DCC is providing the study with information about clinical PROM use, which can improve patient-provider communication, decrease symptom severity and improve outcomes.

Only 18 facilities were chosen nationwide to participate in the study which began July 2018. The study captures the opinions of clinical staff in how they use and interpret distress in oncology patients. The information provided will remain anonymous but will help guide the oncology standards for distress screening in cancer patients. It is important to assess the distress in patients with cancer because if it goes unidentified it can lead to additional complications for patients and families. By addressing a patient’s financial, practical, spiritual and emotional well-being, we can care for the whole person.

“Ultimately, this study will shape how we respond to the stress and emotional components of having cancer,” says Shannon McPherson, oncology counselor at Dorcy Cancer Center. “Cancer effects our patients not only physically, but also emotionally and financially. In addition, it can impact the patient’s family. If we are aware of the patient’s needs, we can link them to the appropriate resources and develop interventions to help the patient through their individual challenges.”

Participating in the study are Dr. Geoffrey Johnson, radiation oncologist; Darlene Armijo, BS, patient care coordinator and certified patient navigator; Tania Talbott, BSN, RN; Shannon McPherson, MSW, LCSW, oncology counselor and Arlie Wilbourn, RT, radiation therapist. Phone interviews are conducted to see what type of distress screening is being utilized at DCC, how the center identifies when cancer patients may be experiencing distress, who patients are referred to when distress is detected and how the center executes follow-ups.

The PROM study allows DCC to meet the Commission on Cancer Standard 4.7 quality rating. DCC’s cancer care is already an Approved and Accredited Cancer Program by the COC. Only one in four hospitals treating cancer patients has this special COC approval and accreditation which validates the excellence in quality cancer care at St. Mary-Corwin.
